چکیده

The Chandra Deep Field-North survey, which has at its center the Hubble Deep Field-North, has reached an exposure of 1 Ms and is now available to the public for analysis. This great astronomical resource will soon be released to the community in the form of a catalog paper with accurate X-ray fluxes in four bands and astrometry good to ≈ 0.6 ′′ –1.2 ′′ over the entire ACIS-I field. The scientific focus of this contribution is the population of X-ray sources detected at X-ray fluxes below the faintest detection limits of X-ray observatories such as ROSAT and ASCA. These include fairly normal and star-forming galaxies out to z ≈ 2, starburst galaxies from z = 2–4 and possibly very high redshift (z > 6) AGN. The exciting new prospects for studying these populations in the X-ray band are discussed.

1 The Chandra Deep Survey of the Hubble Deep Field North Area . IV . An Ultradeep Image of the HDF - N

We present results from a 479.7 ks Chandra exposure of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N) and its immediate vicinity. In this X-ray image, the deepest ever reported with a 0.5–2.0 keV flux limit of ≈ 4.9 × 10 −17 erg cm −2 s −1 , four new HDF-N X-ray sources are detected bringing the total number of such sources to 12. The new sources include two optically bright (R = 18.3–18.8), low-redshift ...

Chandra has performed a 1.4 Ms survey centred on the Hubble Deep Field-North (HDF-N), probing the X-ray Universe 55–550 times deeper than was possible with pre-Chandra missions. We describe the detected point and extended X-ray sources and discuss their overall multiwavelength (optical, infrared, submillimeter, and radio) properties. Special attention is paid to the HDF-N X-ray sources, luminou...

ON THE NATURE OF EXTREMELY RED OBJECTS: THE 2 Ms CHANDRA DEEP FIELD-NORTH SURVEY RESULTS

Understanding the nature of Extremely Red Objects [EROs; (I − K)≥4] is one of the most challenging issues in observational cosmology. Here we report on the X-ray constraints provided by the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North Survey (CDF-N). X-ray emission has been detected from 11 out of 36 EROs (≈ 30%). Five of these have hard X-ray emission and appear to be obscured AGNs, while non-AGN emission (s...
